I had an interesting helpdesk call today.  Mary calls and said her home page wasn’t showing up.  Our domain has a Group Policy that forces a specific home page to be loaded, so I knew something was up.  I used VNC to see her computer and she was running IE7.  IE7 was going through its “runonce” script to set the search defaults, but, since he hadn’t done that last time, it kept running every time she opened a browser window.

I helped her set the defaults and, voila, the home page came right up.  Good thing to know for the future.

It’s been a whlie, but the geek in me can not stay away forever from a blog.  I started this blog while at my previous employer, but it died because it wasn’t “easy.”  Now, it I will be making more of a concerted effort to blog.

I changed employers in June and moved from an entry-level network technician position to an actual “Network Administrator” role.  As part of this, I moved from an publicly-funded IT organization with over 150 people to a private organization with an IT department consisting of 9 people, including myself, the IT Director, and the CIO.  Huge change for me, but a good one!

I also quit driving 50+ miles/day and now drive 7.2 miles round trip for my commute.

Welcome to my blog.  My goal of this blog is simple.  I want to share my professional knowledge with others.  I am a network administrator by profession with a BS in Information Systems and a Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA).  You can find me managing the network at my campus of an educational institution in Portland, Oregon.

I will likely be adding to my list of certifications.  A desired certification I have is the Foundry Networks Certified Network Engineer.  Once I get around to it, I’ll go take the Network+ certification exam.  People tell me it should be easy since I have my CCNA certification.

Please feel free to post any comments, tips, tricks, or constructive criticisms.  This blog is intended to be a friendly place for networking information.
